What is ethical AI?

As the reach of artificial Intelligence grows, so do the ethical challenges that come with it. To harness AI responsibly, organisations must prioritise not just efficiency or profitability, but ethical AI principles that ensure fairness, transparency, and sustainability.

Defining ethical AI

At its core, ethical AI refers to the development and deployment of AI systems in a way that aligns with ethical principles, such as fairness, accountability, and respect for human rights. While the technological potential of AI is vast, ethical AI focuses on ensuring that AI technologies themselves benefit society while minimising harm. In practice, this means designing AI systems that are not only technically proficient but also socially responsible.

For private and public sector alike, ethical AI offers a framework for balancing innovation with the broader moral and societal impact of AI technologies. In the private sector, ethical AI helps maintain consumer trust, brand reputation, and regulatory compliance. In the public sector, it ensures that AI-driven policies and services are transparent, inclusive, and equitable.

Ethical AI versus responsible AI

While ‘ethical AI’ and ‘responsible AI’ are often used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference between the two concepts. Ethical AI is rooted in moral and philosophical considerations, focusing on broader societal principles such as justice, fairness, and respect for individual rights. It asks questions like: Is this AI application fair to all users? Does it protect the privacy and dignity of individuals? Does it contribute to the common good?

Responsible AI, on the other hand, has a more practical, operational and technological focus. It refers to the development and use of AI systems in a way that accounts for the potential risks and unintended consequences of AI technologies. In this context, ‘responsibility’ refers to the duty of organisations to assess the potential impacts of their AI models and take proactive steps to mitigate negative outcomes, such as discrimination or privacy breaches. Responsible AI prioritises accountability and governance, ensuring that organisations are prepared to address ethical challenges when they arise.

For example, while an AI-driven hiring algorithm may be designed with responsible AI principles in mind (such as reducing bias and ensuring compliance with employment laws), it still needs to be evaluated against ethical AI principles to ensure that the algorithm promotes fairness and does not unintentionally disadvantage certain groups of applicants.

Ethical AI vs. AI safety

Another distinction that is crucial to grasp is the difference between ethical and safe AI, or AI safety. Safe AI primarily refers to the operational and technical safety of AI systems, ensuring that they function as intended without causing physical or financial harm to users or organisations. For example, safe AI in an autonomous vehicle means the system is designed to prevent accidents and protect the passengers and pedestrians. AI safety can also refer to anticipating the potential enormous power of future AGI and protecting society from future harms.

While safe AI focuses on avoiding direct harm, ethical AI goes further by considering the broader societal implications of AI technologies. An AI system may be ‘safe’ from a technical perspective but still raise ethical concerns. For instance, a facial recognition system used by law enforcement might be safe in terms of accuracy and performance, but its use could still be unethical if it leads to racial profiling or mass surveillance.

So, while safety is an essential component of ethical AI, it is not the only factor. Ethical AI requires a holistic approach that considers not only the immediate technical risks but also the long-term social impact of AI systems.

Data privacy and transparency

Data privacy is one of the most high-profile ethical concerns in AI, particularly as AI systems often rely on vast amounts of personal data to function effectively. For organisations in both the private and public sectors, ensuring the ethical use of data is critical to maintaining trust and compliance with data protection regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union.

Ethical AI systems should be designed with privacy in mind, ensuring that personal data is collected, processed, and stored in ways that respect individual rights. This involves implementing measures such as data anonymisation, informed consent, and robust security protocols. Moreover, transparency is essential to ethical AI; organisations must be open about how data is used and give individuals control over their personal information.

In the public sector, the stakes are even higher. Government use of AI for surveillance, predictive policing, or social services raises concerns about civil liberties and the potential for data misuse. Public institutions have a responsibility to ensure that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and used for the benefit of all citizens, not just select groups.

Addressing bias and fairness

AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on, and biased data can lead to biased outcomes. This issue is particularly important in areas like hiring, lending, and law enforcement, where biased AI systems can perpetuate or even exacerbate social inequalities.

Ethical AI requires rigorous efforts to identify and mitigate bias throughout the AI development process. This includes using diverse and representative datasets, testing AI models for fairness, and implementing ongoing monitoring to detect and correct bias. For private companies, addressing bias is essential for avoiding reputational damage and legal liabilities, while for public institutions, it is critical to ensuring fairness and equality in AI-driven policies and services.

Sustainability and ethical AI

As AI systems become more widespread, their environmental impact is coming under increasing scrutiny. Training large-scale AI models can be resource-intensive, requiring vast amounts of computational power and energy. This raises questions about the sustainability of AI technologies and their contribution to climate change.

For organisations committed to ethical AI, sustainability must be a core consideration. This means developing AI models that are not only efficient and effective but also environmentally responsible. Companies can adopt practices such as optimising algorithms for energy efficiency or using renewable energy sources for data centres. Public institutions can lead by example, incorporating sustainability into AI procurement and development processes.

Promoting human flourishing

At its best, ethical AI should contribute to human flourishing by empowering individuals and improving quality of life. This involves not only minimising harm but also proactively using AI to enhance human well-being. For example, AI can be used to improve healthcare outcomes, make education more accessible, and create new opportunities for economic growth.

However, to ensure that AI truly serves human interests, organisations must involve diverse stakeholders in the development and deployment of AI systems. This includes engaging with ethicists, civil society groups, and affected communities to ensure that AI technologies are aligned with societal values and contribute to the greater good.

Ethical AI is more than just a buzzword – it should be a guiding principle for organisations that want to leverage AI responsibly and sustainably. Ultimately, ethical AI is about ensuring that AI technologies serve humanity and foster a future where technology and society thrive together.
